Vedic Maths For Students

About Vedic Maths

Vedic Mathematics is an ancient system of mathematical techniques and principles rooted in the “Vedas”, the ancient scriptures of India. Specifically, it is derived from the “Atharva Veda”, and was brought into modern recognition through the work of “Swami Bharati Krishna Tirthaji” in the early 20th century.

Key Features of Vedic Mathematics:

 1.  Fast Calculations : Vedic Mathematics provides shortcuts and methods to perform complex calculations much faster than traditional methods. It is particularly useful for mental math.

2.  Sutras (Formulas) : It is based on 16 main “sutras” (aphorisms or mathematical principles) and 13 “sub-sutras”. These sutras are concise and flexible, applicable to a wide range of mathematical problems.

3.  Universal Application : The techniques can be applied to arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, and other branches of mathematics.

4.  Mental Math : Many Vedic methods reduce the need for written steps, enabling practitioners to perform calculations mentally.

5.  Improves Numerical Skills : It enhances mental agility, logical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.

6.  User-Friendly : It simplifies complex operations, making mathematics more enjoyable and less intimidating.

Examples of Vedic Math Techniques:

1.  Multiplication Shortcut :
Multiply numbers close to a base (e.g., 10, 100, 1000).
For example, \( 98 \times 97 \):
– Base = 100.
– \( 98 = 100 – 2 \), \( 97 = 100 – 3 \).
– \( 98 \times 97 = (100 – (2 + 3)) \times 100 + (2 \times 3) = 9409 \).

2.  Squaring Numbers Ending in 5 :
For \( n5^2 \), calculate \( n \times (n+1) \) and append 25.
Example: \( 25^2 = 2 \times 3 \text{ (next number)} = 6 \), so \( 625 \).

3.  Divisibility Tests : Quick methods to determine whether a number is divisible by another.

Examples of Vedic Math Techniques:

Advantages :

Learning “Vedic Mathematics” offers numerous advantages, making it beneficial for students, professionals, and anyone looking to enhance their numerical abilities.

1.  Fast Calculations : Vedic Math provides shortcuts and mental math techniques that significantly speed up calculations.

  • Useful for solving problems in exams, especially competitive ones like GRE, GMAT, CAT, or SAT.

2.  Enhances Mental Agility : Encourages solving problems mentally, improving cognitive abilities, focus, and mental clarity.

  • Reduces reliance on calculators or written steps.

3.  Improves Accuracy : The techniques reduce errors by offering systematic and logical approaches.

  • Cross-verification methods embedded in the sutras ensure results are accurate.

4.  Simplifies Complex Problems : Breaks down challenging calculations into simple, manageable steps.

  • Makes topics like multiplication, division, square roots, algebra, and geometry more approachable.

5.  Boosts Confidence in Math : Overcomes math-related anxiety by making calculations easier and fun.

  • Encourages students to engage more actively in mathematics.

6.  Applicable to Multiple Topics : The methods can be used for a wide range of mathematical fields, including :

  • Arithmetic (Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division)
  • Algebra
  • Geometry
  • Trigonometry
  • Calculus

7.  Time-Saving : Particularly beneficial for timed tests, where every second counts.

  • Efficient problem-solving leads to better time management.

8.  Universal Applicability : Vedic Math techniques can be applied to all number systems and are not limited to specific types of problems.

9.  Enhances Creativity : Encourages thinking outside the box, helping learners discover multiple ways to solve the same problem.

  • Improves logical reasoning and innovative problem-solving.

10.  Supports Brain Development : Stimulates both the left (logical) and right (creative) sides of the brain, fostering balanced mental growth.

11.  Reduces Math Phobia : By simplifying mathematical operations, it helps students overcome fear and build a positive attitude toward math.

12.  Cultural and Historical Significance : Connects learners with India’s rich mathematical heritage, inspiring a sense of pride and curiosity.

FAQs About a Vedic Maths

Our education system has been connected to the west and vedic maths didn't
have a structure for a long time. But nowadays people are getting aware of vedic
maths and how it is going to benefit their kids. Some schools have already started
Vedic Maths classes as extra curricular classes. We are hoping soon Vedic Math will
get its deserved place in the school curriculum.

Vedic Maths is new for schools but if school teachers are aware of Vedic Maths
they will accept for sure because the ultimate goal is to reach the solution. If they are
not aware your kid will explain to them. If you need us to explain them ,we are happy
to help.

Please don't just focus on Scoring marks in exams only. There is no harm if the
kid learns both ways.Look at the long term benefits of VM techniques.

The whole idea of having one session in a week is to not add extra burden.

The kid will be learning fundamentals of maths which will make him faster in
mental calculations which will help him later in life.Kids have more grasping power
than grown ups so its better he starts early.

Well it depends on the kid also. The curriculum is divided into 3
levels(Beginner,Intermediate,Advanced). For Grade 4-6, the course duration is 8
months and for Grade 7 and above, the course duration is 10 months. (As we
already know the kid's grade, we give a specific answer.)

Trust me. Let your ward attend the demo session, he/she himself/herself tell
you how much he/she loved it because it increases the interest of the kids as they
see how they can do complex calculations so easily and quickly.
